What is LERN?
LERN is a private network specifically designed to host online educational services and resources for schools. It supports the Ministry of Education strategy of bringing together schools, parents, resources and educational suppliers.
 
How will LERN benefit your school?
LERN provides schools with fast and safe online access to a wide variety of educational resources and information.

How does it work?
LERN brings together education resources and makes them available to schools within one secure network environment.
 
  • Enables direct connectivity between a significant number of schools and hosted applications and resources.
  • Enables connectivity between schools and networks such as NEAL and KAREN.
  • Promotes the use of hosted services by minimising access costs.
  • Offers economies of scale advantages through high speed broadband connectivity.
 
  Future development will provide:
 
  • Support of video conferencing and access to the Ministry of Education bridge as well as other Ministry resources.
  • An open access, standards-based network that will allow any hosting provider and any access provider to connect providing that minimum standards are met.
 
 
 
LERN Mission
 
  • To benefit the New Zealand education community through the sharing of online resources and communication tools.
  • To encourage the adoption of standards and the interoperability of the essential online applications involved in the New Zealand education environment.
  • To ensure efficient, reliable and secure data transfer between the key online applications with which schools are engaging.
 
LERN Sponsorship
LERN is a not-for-profit organisation funded by Watchdog, Maxnet and Dataview with input from the Ministry of Education (MoE), local schools, the community and parents.
 
 
DATAVIEW
KnowledgeNET is an Online Learning Environment provided by Dataview. KnowledgeNET provides a gateway for educators, students, parents/caregivers and whanau to access their school's virtual classroom, approved Internet sites, calendars, assessment information, newsletters, forums and a host of interoperable tools to take teaching and learning into the 21st century.
 
KnowledgeNET is currently deployed in over 150 New Zealand schools.
 
WATCHDOG
Watchdog provides the latest online filtering and firewalling services, for safe and secure Internet use. It is funded by the Ministry of Education to supply these services to all state/state integrated schools in New Zealand.
 
Over 900 schools are currently using this service.
 
 
MAXNET
Maxnet provides the full range of ISP services including high speed Internet, high availability server hosting, email and filtering services i.e SPAM and Virus filtering.
 
Maxnet services are currently deployed in a number of New Zealand's largest schools.
